How to be more approachable

Small signals that invite people in.

If people rarely strike up conversations with you, it usually is not that you are unlikable, it is that your signals are accidentally saying "do not approach." Approachability is mostly a set of small, learnable cues that tell people you are open and friendly.

Your face is doing more than you think

Many people have a neutral resting expression that reads as unfriendly or closed off, without meaning to. A soft, relaxed expression and the occasional genuine smile completely change how open you seem. You do not have to grin, just soften. It signals "I am friendly" before you say a word.

Open up your body language

Crossed arms, hunched shoulders, and eyes locked on your phone are all "keep away" signals. Uncross, lift your head, keep your posture open, and look up and around instead of down. Open posture is a quiet invitation.

Make brief, warm eye contact

A quick glance and a small smile, rather than avoiding eyes entirely, tells people you are open to interaction. You do not have to stare, just be willing to meet someone's eyes warmly for a second. That tiny signal makes a huge difference in whether people feel they can talk to you.

Give people an easy in

Approachable people leave little openings, a friendly comment, a warm acknowledgment, being the one who says hello first. When you make the smallest first move, you signal that you are safe and easy to talk to, and people relax around you.

You do not have to be outgoing to be approachable. You just have to stop accidentally signaling "stay away."
