How to be more assertive without being aggressive

Clear and calm, the sweet spot between passive and aggressive.

Assertiveness is not aggression. It is saying what you want, need, or think, clearly and calmly, while still respecting the other person. It is the healthy middle between staying silent and blowing up.

Say what you want directly

Hints and hoping do not work. State your need plainly and kindly. Directness is not rude, it is clear.

"I would like to leave by six today" beats "I guess I might need to head out at some point, if that is okay?"

Use "I" statements

Own your needs and feelings instead of blaming. It is firm without being an attack.

"I need a bit more notice on changes like this" lands better than "You always spring things on me."

Drop the over-apologizing

Cut the "sorry to bother you" and "this is probably silly." You are allowed to take up space and ask for things.

Hold the line calmly

Assertive people can repeat a boundary without escalating. You do not need volume, just steadiness.

"I hear you, and my answer is the same."

Assertive is respectful both ways

The goal is to honor your needs and theirs. Say your piece, then genuinely listen to theirs.
