How to give feedback without upsetting people

Honest and kind are not opposites. Here is how to do both.

Good feedback changes behavior without damaging the relationship. Bad feedback does the reverse. The difference is not honesty, it is delivery, timing, and respect.

Ask permission and pick the moment

Feedback dropped on someone in front of others triggers defense. A quick, private check-in opens the door.

"Do you have a minute? I want to share something that might help with the next one."

Be specific about behavior, not character

"You are careless" is an attack. "The report had a few numbers off" is workable. Point at the thing, not the person.

Say the impact, then the ask

Explain why it matters and what you would like instead, clearly.

"When it comes in late, the whole team gets stuck waiting. Could you flag me by Thursday if it is going to slip?"

Skip the compliment sandwich

Burying feedback between fake praise makes people distrust your compliments and miss the message. Be warm and direct instead. Respect people enough to be clear.

End with belief in them

Close on the message that you are on their side. That is what makes feedback feel like support instead of an attack.

"I am telling you because I know you can nail this, and I want you to."

Practice the hard conversation

Communication Gym lets you rehearse giving feedback with an AI that reacts like a real person, so you find words that are both honest and kind before it counts.
