How to have deeper conversations
Surface conversation is fine, but it gets lonely. Deeper conversations are how acquaintances become friends. They do not require being intense, just a little more open and a little more curious.
Ask better questions
Swap the autopilot questions for ones that invite a real answer. Same effort, much better conversation.
Instead of "How was your weekend?" try "What is something you are looking forward to lately?"
Go first with a little openness
People match your level. If you share something slightly real, they usually will too. Vulnerability, in small doses, is an invitation.
"Honestly, I have been rethinking a lot about what I want this year." Then let them in.
Follow feeling, not just facts
When they mention something, ask how it was for them, not just what happened. That is where the real conversation lives.
"What was that like for you?" is one of the most connecting questions there is.
Do not rush to advice
Depth needs safety. If every share gets met with a fix, people stay shallow. Stay curious a beat longer before you problem-solve.
Let silence do its work
The deeper things often come right after a pause. Resist filling every gap, and give the moment room to open.
