How to have better body language in conversation

Small physical changes that change how you come across.

People read your body before they hear your words. The good news is you do not need to become an actor. A few small adjustments make you look more confident, warm, and present.

Open up

Uncross your arms, unhunch your shoulders, and face the person. Open posture reads as confident and approachable, and it even helps you feel calmer.

Make warm, natural eye contact

Hold eye contact enough to show you are present, then look away naturally. Aim for connected, not a staring contest. If eye contact is hard, look at the space between their eyes.

Slow your movements

Fidgeting and quick, jittery motion signal nerves. Slower, deliberate movement signals ease. Let your hands rest and gesture calmly.

Let your face show you are engaged

A relaxed, responsive face, nodding, reacting, a genuine smile, tells people you are with them. A blank face makes even a good conversation feel cold.

Mirror gently

Subtly matching the other person’s energy and posture builds rapport. Keep it light and natural, never a copy.

Get comfortable so it comes naturally

Body language relaxes when the conversation does. Communication Gym lets you practice until talking feels easy, and confident body language follows.
