How to keep a text conversation going

Why texts go dry, and how to keep one alive with someone you like.

Most texting conversations die for one boring reason: both people keep asking flat questions and giving flat answers. A good text does two things at once. It gives the other person something to react to, and it makes replying easy.

Do not just ask. React, then ask.

"How was your day" gets "good, you?" and the conversation flatlines. Instead, respond to what they said, add a little of yourself, then ask something specific.

They say: "Just got back from the gym."
You: "Respect. I have been telling myself I will go all week. What is your trick for actually showing up?"

Make questions specific, not generic

Generic questions get generic answers. A specific one is easier and more fun to answer because it gives them something concrete to grab.

Instead of "What do you like to do for fun?" try "What is the last thing you did that you would actually recommend?"

Callback to something they said earlier

Referencing an earlier detail is the easiest way to feel warm and attentive. It says I was paying attention, without you having to say it.

"How did the big presentation go? You said it was today."

Bring energy, not just questions

You do not have to interview them. Share a small moment from your day, a reaction, an opinion, a joke. Statements keep a thread alive as much as questions do, and they give the other person something to bounce off.

Know when to move it forward

Texting is a bridge, not the destination. If it is flowing, do not text it into the ground. Suggest the next step while the energy is good.

"This is more fun than texting should be. We should just grab a drink. Are you free Thursday?"

Match their effort

If you are writing paragraphs and getting one-word replies, ease off rather than trying harder. Interest is mutual, and matching their pace protects your energy and reads as secure.

Practice your texting without the pressure

It is hard to know what to send when you actually like someone. Communication Gym lets you practice real conversations with an AI that plays the other person and gives you feedback, so you show up relaxed and interesting.
