How to remember names when you meet people

Practical tricks that actually stick, plus how to recover.

You do not have a bad memory for names. You were just never paying attention at the one moment that matters: when you heard it. A few small habits fix that.

Actually hear it

Most of the time you never encoded the name because you were busy being nervous. Pause and genuinely register it the second you hear it.

Say it back right away

Repeating the name immediately locks it in and feels warm.

"Marcus, great to meet you." Then use it once more before you part: "Good talking, Marcus."

Attach it to something

Link the name to a detail, an image, or someone else you know with that name. A silly mental picture sticks better than repetition.

Use it a couple of times, not too many

Sprinkling the name in once or twice cements it and builds rapport. Overusing it sounds like a sales script, so keep it natural.

Recover gracefully when you blank

Everyone forgets. Own it lightly and move on.

"I am so sorry, remind me of your name? I was too busy enjoying the conversation to lock it in."
