How to tell a good story

A simple structure so your stories land instead of ramble.

Great storytellers are not more interesting than you. They just shape the same events better. A good everyday story has a clear setup, one point, and a real ending. That is most of it.

Start with the hook, not the backstory

Do not open with logistics. Open with the interesting part, then fill in what is needed.

Instead of "So it was Tuesday, or maybe Wednesday," try "I almost got arrested for buying a birthday cake."

Have one point

Before you start, know why you are telling it. Funny? Surprising? A lesson? If you do not know the point, your listener will not find one either, and the story wanders.

Cut ruthlessly

The fastest way to be a better storyteller is to remove the details that do not serve the point. Nobody needs the exact time or the friend's cousin's name. Brevity is charisma.

Build a little tension

A story is only interesting if something is at stake or uncertain. Slow down right before the turn so the payoff has room to hit.

Land the ending on purpose

Do not let it trail off into "and yeah, it was funny." Know your last line, deliver it, and stop. A clean ending is what makes people say "tell that one again."
