How to be a better listener

The best conversationalists are the best listeners. Here is how.

People think being good at conversation means talking well. It mostly means listening well. When someone feels truly heard, they leave thinking you are great to talk to, even if you barely spoke.

Listen to understand, not to reply

Most of us listen while loading our response. People feel the difference. Try just following what they mean, and trust that a reply will come when it is your turn.

Do not rush to fix

When someone shares a problem, the instinct is to solve it. Often they want to feel understood first. A little acknowledgment goes further than a quick solution.

"That sounds really draining. No wonder you are wiped." Then, if it fits, "Do you want to think it through, or just vent?"

Ask the follow-up question

The signal that you were really listening is a good follow-up. It says I heard you and I want more.

"You said it was the second time this happened. What was the first time like?"

Let there be silence

Do not fill every pause. A couple of seconds of quiet gives people room to say the deeper thing they were not sure they would share.

Put the phone away

Divided attention is felt instantly. Full presence, even for five minutes, is rare and memorable.

Practice really listening
