How to be funnier over text

Text strips out tone, timing, and facial expression, the three things that make something funny out loud. That is why a line that would kill in person lands flat on a screen. The fix is to lean into what text is actually good at: brevity, surprise, and playful exaggeration.

Shorter is funnier

On text, the fewer words before the punch, the harder it hits. Cut the setup down to almost nothing. A long, explained joke dies on a screen. A quick, dry one-liner lands.

Them: "I burned the entire dinner." You: "So, cereal night." (Fast, dry, done.)

Use playful exaggeration

Text loves a little absurd overstatement, because it reads as clearly playful without needing a wink. Take something small and blow it up.

"You left the party at 9? That is not leaving early, that is a witness protection exit."

Callbacks are gold over text

Reference a funny thing from earlier in the conversation, or a running joke between you. Callbacks feel clever and intimate, and they signal you were paying attention. They are the easiest way to seem effortlessly funny.

Let them have the last laugh sometimes

Trying to top every message gets exhausting and competitive. Sometimes the funniest move is a simple "okay that got me" or a single laughing reaction. Warmth beats winning. Being fun to text with is the goal, not proving you are the funnier one.

And read the room: if they are being sincere or vulnerable, drop the jokes and meet them there. Knowing when not to be funny is part of being genuinely good at it.
