How to deal with a difficult coworker

Stay professional, set boundaries, and protect your peace.

You cannot control a difficult coworker, but you can control how you respond. The goal is not to win or to change who they are. It is to protect your work, your boundaries, and your calm.

Address the behavior, not the person

Vague frustration turns into drama. A specific, calm comment about the behavior is far more effective.

"When feedback comes in the group chat, it lands as public criticism. Can we keep those one on one?"

Stay calm and factual

Difficult people often feed on reaction. Keep your tone even and stick to facts. Calm is a boundary in itself.

Set clear limits

You are allowed to define how you will and will not be treated, kindly and firmly.

"I want to help, but I need us to keep it respectful. Let us take the tone down and figure this out."

Document and escalate if needed

If it crosses into harassment or keeps affecting your work, keep a simple record and raise it with your manager or HR, factually and without venting.

Do not take the bait

Not every jab needs a response. Choosing what to ignore protects your energy and denies the drama its fuel.
