How to handle criticism without getting defensive
Criticism stings, and the instinct is to defend or shut down. But how you handle it says a lot about you. You can stay calm, take what is useful, and let go of the rest.
Pause before you react
The first feeling is defensiveness. Take a breath before responding so you answer from calm, not sting.
Get curious instead of defensive
Treat it as information to examine, not an attack to repel. A question turns a confrontation into a conversation.
"That is useful to hear. Can you give me an example so I understand exactly what you mean?"
Separate the signal from the delivery
Even clumsy or harsh feedback can contain something true. Take the useful part, and do not let a bad delivery make you dismiss it, or a fair point crush you.
You can acknowledge without fully agreeing
You do not have to accept every criticism. You can consider it and still hold your view, calmly.
"I hear you. I see it a bit differently, but I will think about it."
Do not let it define you
One piece of feedback is about one thing, not your whole worth. Take the lesson, keep your dignity, and move on.
