How to talk to someone you find intimidating

Stay grounded and be yourself, even with big personalities.

A powerful boss, an attractive stranger, someone whose accomplishments dwarf yours. When someone intimidates us, we tend to freeze, over-talk, or shrink. But the intimidation is mostly in your head, and a few shifts help you speak like yourself around anyone.

Remember they are just a person

Whatever their status, they get nervous, feel insecure, and have bad days like everyone else. Picture the ordinary human under the impressive title. Taking them off the pedestal in your mind, even a little, instantly lowers the pressure and helps you speak normally.

Do not perform, just be curious

The instinct with intimidating people is to try to impress them, which usually backfires into stiffness or babbling. Drop it. Be genuinely curious about them instead. Curiosity gets you out of your own head, and impressive people are often relieved when someone treats them like a person instead of a trophy.

Slow down

Intimidation makes us rush, talk fast, and fill silence. Deliberately slow your pace. Take a breath before you answer. Let a pause sit. A slower tempo reads as calm confidence, and it gives you room to actually think instead of spiraling.

Let yourself have a point of view

You do not have to agree with everything an intimidating person says to be respectful. Having your own honest take, offered warmly, earns far more respect than nodding along. People with real presence are often drawn to those who can hold their own ground kindly.

Intimidation shrinks the moment you remember you are two people talking, not an audition.
